Today, we want to share with you all our top 5 Tips for Starting Your Weight Loss Journey. Losing weight can seem like an overwhelming task, and we are no stranger to fad diets, obsessive macro counting, and “starting over” every few weeks. It took us a long time to finally start seeing the results we wanted because we just didn’t know how to start.

The truth is, though, that losing weight can be simple once you’re at a place in your life where you can build both a healthy relationship with food and a healthy relationship with yourself.

1. Eat Whole Plant Foods

This one may seem like common sense, but it’s super important. Even if you’re restricting your calories and working out a ton, you still aren’t going to achieve your goals for health if you’re filling up on processed food.

If you can think of a fad diet, chances are we’ve tried it. Keto, IIFYM, Paleo, Atkins, blah blah blah. While some of them did make us lose weight, the way our bodies felt ultimately made these diets unsustainable in the long run.

Plant foods are simple, and weight loss with plant foods is simple, too. Our bodies know exactly how to utilize these foods as fuel, and you’ll feel amazing because you’re putting good stuff into your body rather than just focusing on cutting things out.

Once we started eating a predominantly whole foods plant-based diet, we found it less and less necessary to obsessively calorie count or keep track of macros. Our bodies just know what to do!


2. Don’t Obsess Over Losing Weight

Easier said than done – we know – but obsessing over your desire to lose weight won’t make it happen any faster. In fact, we find that it hinders our progress significantly.

We are strong believers that your thoughts become your reality, and if you’re constantly having negative thoughts about your weight or your weight loss progress, then how could you possibly start seeing positive results?

You won’t.

To avoid obsessive and negative thinking, stop weighing yourself every day, stop comparing your journey to somebody else’s, and stop saying horrible things about your own body.

It’s amazing how many physical and real-life changes you see when you start thinking positively. 

On the same note, we really advise you not to obsess over your food either. To have a healthy relationship with food, you need to find balance. We love food, and we enjoy the occasional treat just as much as anybody else. By not beating ourselves up over that, we feel that most “junk food” has lost its power over our thoughts.


3. Eat for Good Health, Not a Good Body

Here’s the thing. When you are eating (or not eating enough) with your body as your only motivator, it is very easy to fall into unhealthy habits and do major harm to your body in the long run.

On the other hand, when you eat for good health, the body sort of comes as an added bonus by default.

You have to learn to trust this process. Put good food into your body and trust that it knows how to utilize that food. By shifting your focus and prioritizing your health, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the changes you’ll start noticing in your physical appearance.


4. Find Healthy Outlets for Your Stress

We used to be the kind of people who – when anything went wrong – turned to food. We ate when we were bored, when we were anxious, and when we were depressed. Food became a comfort, and we abused it.

Out of everything on the list, we found this step in our journey to be the most difficult. It really comes down to accepting that food is meant to fuel your body and not to make you feel better on a bad day.

By turning to other outlets when we needed comfort or a way to relieve stress, we were able to take back some of the control that food had over us. Looking back – even just a few months into this journey ourselves – it is incredible how much power we didn’t know we had given up at the time.

You deserve to be in control.


5. Drink Plenty of Water

Are you sick of hearing this one? Oh well.

We cannot stress to you enough how important to your weight loss journey it is to drink water throughout the day. We aren’t kidding when we say that there are significant changes in the amount of weight we lose depending on how much water we’ve been drinking.

You’ll also probably be cutting out a lot of processed and sugary crap when you replace your drinks with water, and that is great!

We love infusing our water to make it taste extra refreshing, and this definitely helps us drink more of it throughout the day.
